Little Sheep. Big Personalities
Babydoll Southdown × Valais Blacknose
It's hard to walk past one of these lambs without smiling.
Our Balsamroot companion lambs bring together two of the most charming sheep breeds—the small, sweet-faced Babydoll Southdown and the famously fluffy Valais Blacknose.
The result is an incredibly endearing pasture companion with a look and personality all its own.
Thoughtfully Bred
Cute matters. Health matters more.
Every pairing at Balsamroot Ranch is thoughtfully considered with the health of both ewe and lamb at the forefront.
We select breeding animals with attention to genetics, conformation, health, temperament, and the traits we hope to carry forward. We also carefully consider the size and characteristics of each pairing, with particular attention to the health and safety of the ewe through pregnancy and lambing.
Our goal isn't simply to produce more lambs. It's to continually improve the quality, health, and temperament of the animals we raise.

Bred for Life Beyond Production
We wanted a sheep that wasn't simply beautiful to look at, but genuinely enjoyable to have around.
Babydoll Southdowns are loved for their smaller stature, easy-going disposition, and signature "Babydoll smile." Valais Blacknose are treasured for their striking teddy-bear appearance and friendly, docile personalities.
Together, they create wonderfully unique sheep well suited to the family farm, acreage, or homestead.
Pasture Pets With Purpose
They're cute, but they're still sheep.
Our lambs are happiest outside with their flock, grazing pasture and becoming part of the everyday rhythm of life on a small farm.
Their Babydoll heritage brings smaller stature and charm, while their Valais influence can bring beautiful fleece, distinctive markings, and that unmistakable fluffy appearance.
Every cross is a little different and that's part of what makes them special.
Better Together
Sheep are flock animals and thrive with companionship.
We encourage our lambs to go to homes with other sheep or in pairs whenever possible. Give them good pasture, proper care, another sheep beside them, and they make wonderful additions to a family farm or acreage.
Born & Raised at Balsamroot
Our lambs are born and raised here in the foothills of Central Washington on our 100-acre ranch.
They're raised on pasture, handled with care, and thoughtfully bred with an eye toward the generations that come after them.
Raised to Know People
We intentionally spend time with our lambs from an early age, getting them accustomed to people and everyday life around the ranch.
Our goal is to raise confident, well-socialized lambs that transition comfortably into their new homes.
Every lamb has its own personality. Some are curious. Some are quiet. Some quickly learn exactly who brings the treats.
